“They can’t afford what we got, not even the king.”
Despite her affirmations that she is in a new place in life, we find some of the Alicia Keys we first came to know and love on her latest release “Not Even A King”. A stark contrast to her “Girl On Fire” and “New Day” singles off her newest album Girl On Fire, “Not Even A King” is an inspiring, heart-string tugging call to self-love that harkens to Alicia a la Diary of Alicia Keys.
She performed the song at Stand Up To Cancer on Friday night. Peep the lyrics and check out her performance below:
Money
Some people so poor that all they’ve got is money
And diamonds
Some people waste their lives counting their thousands.
I don’t care what they’re offering…
how much gold they bring
They can’t afford what we’ve got
Not even the kingOooh Castles
Some people so lonely, what good is a castle
Surrounded by people
but ain’t got a friend who’s not on the payroll
I don’t care what they bring
they can have everything
they can’t afford what we got
Not even a king
