Puerto Rican beauty Joan Smalls covers the July 2012 issue of “W” magazine. The 23 year-old talked to the magazine about her Caribbean background and how people are sometimes confused about it because of her name and complexion.
“I’m a little bit of everything,” she says. “Sometimes people think I’m not Puerto Rican, because my name doesn’t sound Spanish.
“I just have something to prove…I know I’m representing a group—black, Latin, whatever you want to put me with—and I want to show that they are beautiful the way they are. I think that’s really important for our youth to see. Fashion is part of our culture…And it’s about more than just a pretty dress.”
Joan credits her start of her success to Givenchy’s Creative Director Riccardo Tisci saying, “When I first started it never picked up for me, doing shows.” But after Riccardo booked her for Givenchy in 2010, she says, “He saw my potential. And it changed people’s perspective.”
Her W pics were shot by Steven Meisel. Joan also covered both Vogue Australia and Vogue Italia in May.

The seemingly ageless Naomi Campbell stuns in this Emma Summerton gallery, also in the same issue.
