As of June 15, LIME Jamaica customers will now pay $2.99 per minute for prepaid mobile phone calls aqnd international calls to the USA, Canada & UK landlines. Post-paid calls from LIME to LIME handsets was also reduced to $1.99 per minute. These incredibly low prices are due to the new TALK EZ plan which consumers can opt into by dialling *123*1# and pressing send.
According to LIME’s managing director for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands Garry Sinclair
“This is truly ground-breaking for the entire industry. It is also a seminal moment in our nation’s history with consumers as the biggest winners. LIME Jamaica is leading the charge in making voice calls cost significantly less. TALK EZ’s “one-rate” charge means that a consumer can call a relative in Clarendon, Toronto or New York for the same unbelievably low rate of $2.99 per minute.”
“LIME understands the economic challenges everyone is facing and wants Jamaicans to be able to stretch their disposable income. Communication is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity and we are proud to lead Jamaica into an era of true telecommunication liberalisation,” he added.
So to be clear, let me break it down the per-minute charges for you
$1.99- LIME to LIME (post- paid)
$2.99-LIME to LIME (pre-paid), LIME to International landlines (US, UK, Canada)
$6.99- LIME to other networks (AKA Digicel)
Apart from the rate reductions, Sinclair further announced limited reductions in phone and sim card costs as well as a credit offer for buying phones. This led to a rush of customers who swarmed various LIME stores to cash in on the deals. According to the Jamaica Observer, at one office close to 200 phones were sold in three hours.
The company had been advocating for a more level playing field in response to the rates st by rival Digicel. their efforts proved successful with the announcement of the interim mobile termination rate set by the Office of Utility Regulation (OUR).
Before the cut customers paid $8.00 a minute.
Digicel customers still pay $8.15 for local calls.
