Congrats to 24 year-old Chantal Zaky Miss Matahari Furniture who on Saturday night (May 12) was crowned the new Miss Universe Jamaica 2012.
This was the second try at the title for Chantal who placed third in last years competition. Her win this year means she will represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe Pageant in South Africa later this year.
Of the other 16 contestants who participated in this year’s pageant (staged at the National Indoor Sports Centre) the first runner-up position went to Racquel Jones, followed by Sherece Cowan, who also won the award for People Choice. Rounding up to the top five were Amanda Mitchell and Danisha Scott.
Sonya Stewart won the sectional prizedfor Most Congenial, Allyson Gayle grabbed Most Aware and Chantal in addition to winning, also copped the Best Body award.
The Judges for the night were Deiwight Peters from Saints International, Jamaica Observer Lifestyle Editor Novia McDonald-Whyte, Mission Catwalk host and executive producer Kenya Linton-George and State Minister in the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, Damion Crawford.
Judging the competition seemed a tough challenge for them as instead of 10 semi-fianlists, there were 11, due to a tie. The ladies were that good!
Performances this year came from Leftside and Chino.
Compared to last year, this years staging was top notch and franchise owner Dimitris Kosvogianis must be commended for the efforts made by his team, who even went as far as having the reigning Miss Universe, Angola’s Leila Lopes on hand for the coronation.
Miss Jamaica Universe 2011 (the official title was changed this year) Shakira Martin took her final walk before handing over her crown to Chantal.
The Miss Universe Jamaica pagent was hosted by Kerie Ann ‘Kiki’ Lewis and Andrew Lawrence.
