Dominicans are in hot debate over the “gay cruise” passengers touring the island. Two passengers alleged to have been involved in public sexual acts are in police custody at the CID Department. DominicaNewsOnline reports that two males from California John Robert Hart and Dennis Jay Mayer have been charged with buggery and indecent exposure and are expected to appear in court on Thursday morning. According to reports the passengers were “informed of the laws of Dominica and they were well aware that their acts would be considered a criminal offence.” Police Chief Cyrille Carrette has confirmed the arrests. 
The ship’s visit evoked mixed reaction from observers who noted that “only men” were disembarking from the “Celebrity X Cruises” ship docked at the bayfront. 
Some displeased members of the public told the online publication that they were protesting what they consider to be “immoral behavior” on that cruise ship. Eyewitnesses even claim to have seen what they described as sexual activity taking place on the ship said to be carrying only male cruise passengers. Here are some comments from DNO:
i believe that dominicans can be very ridiculous! welcoming a gay cruise ship does not mean that you are condoning sexuality. we should maintain our grounds against it but we should not discriminate, remember we are dealing with human beings. hate the sin but love the sinner… we need to stop being hypocrites because we have homosexuality right here in dominica and few of us speak against the issue so y wait for a gay cruise ship to come here then protest? why? we are t duble standard we accept some things when it suits us and we are against when it does not suit us. these men are still human beings…take that into consideration before putting your foot in your mouth!!!
wellllll my fellow Dominicans our constitution clearly indicates that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. So it matters NOT if there are gay citizens, what matters is the public sexual offence. Stop being ignorant and think of it! With knowledge of our laws, why would the govt. allow this ship to dock, knowing the would be public displays of affection?
Has anyone been to Carnival lately? There are groups of people having “air sex” in public while dressed like prostitutes … children too! This is like the pot calling the kettle black. You cannot carry on like sex starved beasts for 2 weeks out of the year and then condem anyone else for doing the same, or close to the same. What are you all so afraid of? Gay people are not going to sneak up behind you and bugger you. So don’t get your panties in a twist over this. Learn to Co-exist with people who think differently than you do. God created us ALL in his image – not just Dominicans.
Many people on this board have the situation all twisted. They are arguing about the rightness and wrongness of the gay philosophy. This is a non-starter, since Dominica as a nation have indeed been very tolerant of the lifestyle. For that matter a growing cartel of locals partake in this deviancy themselves. What is at stake here is whether these gentlemen actually practised thier act in full view of the public. If that is so then it is a straight case.(no pun intended) Dominica is a country governed by laws. And such acts, when performed publicly are not only tasteless but a violation of applicable laws. It must be noted to that if a straight couple performed thier act publicly, then similar punitive action should be applied.
