The life of late rap pioneer Heavy D will be chronicled in a documentary airing Sunday on the BET-owned Centric TV network.
“Be Inspired: The Life of Heavy D” will feature interviews with the Jamaican-born rapper’s family as well as artists such as Will Smith, Cee Lo Green, Big Daddy Kane, Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah.
Heavy D (born Dwight Arrington Myers), earned his stripes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, both as the front man for his group, Heavy D and The Boyz, and as a solo artist. Not only was he a rap legend, Heavy D was an actor and record executive. He appeared on TV shows such as “Law and Order”, “Yes Dear” and “The Tracy Morgan Show” as well as the movie Tower Heist. He served as President and CEO at the label that gave him his break, Uptown Records.
Heavy D died last November at age 44, from a blood clot that traveled from his leg to his lung. The documentary is inspired by his last words on Twitter: “BE INSPIRED”.
According to Centric TV the documentary includes footage from Heavy D’s last televised performance, at the BET Hip-Hop Awards last October.
