Dominica’s reigning Calypso Monarch Tasha P is the lone female in this years finals. She will defend her crown on Feb. 18th from nine men in a competition which from all accounts is very tight.
Take a look at her performance of “Let The Children Be Children” at last year’s calypso finals and then check out her competition below:
Dice- “Stand Up For Teacher”
Last year the competition was undoubtedly between Tasha P and 4-time calypso king Dice. After dropping out of competition in 2009, Dice returned strong in 2011, but not strong enough to get the crown. Will 2012 be his hear to win a 5th title?
Checko- “AM PM”
Checko is a new comer in the competition.
Sye- “Just Burn”
Sye has shown definite growth since he started competing. The police officer definitely knows how to command a stage. What will he bring on the 18th?
Soul Puss-no song yet..coming
Web..still hunting
Karessah- “Rose Giving Me Blows”
After ten years of competiting, Karessah struck gold in 2009, with Dice’s exit. He won again in 2010, but 2011 was woman time and Tasha P bowl him out. I hope he wont get calypso ‘blows’ from the judges this year.
Vigilante- “Back To Front”
Explosion – “Pasta Wine”
Bobb- Waiting
HONORABLE MENTION-Black Diamond- “Pit Toilet”
It seemed new-comer Black Diamond, had a guaranteds spot with crowd favorite “pit Toilet” however, his nerves got the best of him and he forgot his words and thus lost the chance to dethrone queen Tasha P. The calypsonian comes from a talented family -”Pit Toilet” was penned by his uncle Jerry Lloyd and Black Diamond is the son of calypsonian, Joey ’Explosion’ Lloyd- he will be back again. I’m sure of it.
